Republic of Ireland defender Marc Wilson enlisted the help of a strength and conditioning specialist in his bid to be fit in time for the European Championships in June.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to get to the Euros,” he told Donegalnow.com yesterday. “When I return to full training I’ll try and get back with the Under 21s to get some games under my belt but if I have to got out on loan to get game time I will.

“The rehab’s been going really well, all being well I’ll be back training in full training in three weeks time.

“All I can work on at at the moment is my strength and conditioning and my trainer Matt Nuttall has been a great help in that regard with my upper body work.”

This is Growing Up Strong Episode 18!

 

 

In the first episode for a while (sorry!) I'm joined by Strength and Conditioning Coach Matt Nuttall

Matt is first and foremost an ex-National level kickboxer and has taken this knowledge of combat sports into his strength and conditioning career. One of the main reasons I wanted to get Matt on was the fact that his area is so specific and different to what we've had before.

Amongst other topics we discuss the mentality in takes to develop into an adult athlete, the dangers of loading a movement issue and developing power in combat athletes.

As an ABA England Boxing coach, Matt uses his experience to work with the Academy and teach them the fundamentals of boxing.  

The sessions are designed to be directly correlated to football and are planned with the aim of increasing spacial awareness, footwork skills, agility, change of direction, and confidence, as well as being a fun alternative to the usual football training.

Early specialization is a concern when working with children which is why the forward thinking head Academy coach has employed Matt.

Matt has trained the likes of Marc Wilson (Republic of Ireland International/West Bromwich Albion professional footballer), Zat Knight (Bolton Wanderers), Ibrahim Ba (AC Milan winger), former WBA super-bantamweight Champion Scott Quigg, Olympic medallist Tony Jeffries and Paralympian Zoe Robinson. Matt recently returned from a trip to LA where he completed the Level 1 Box n Burn Certification and also trained with movie star Frank Grillo (pictured).
